CFB War Room: Saturday 9/5 Main Slate Battle Plan

CFB War Room: Saturday 9/5 Main Slate Battle Plan

Hi, I’m Joel aka DraftMasterFlex. Quick hit, clean slate map. You’ll get my favorite game environments, the top team totals worth caring about, who actually did what in Week 0/1, and the DFS pool I’m leaning into by game. I also flag blowout risk since I try not to jam volume pieces in games that die by halftime.

Top Game Environments to Target

  1. Baylor at SMU — total 63 to 65 range, SMU fav ~2.5. Pace and explosive pass rates on both sides. I like double stacks with a bring-back.
  2. Missouri vs Kansas — total low 50s, competitive. QB Jalon Daniels (Kansas, $6600, team total ~27) efficiency has been strong and Missouri’s Cover 3 looks open perimeter shots. Good back-and-forth profile.
  3. Ole Miss at Kentucky — total high 50s, Rebels favored by one score. QB Austin Simmons (Ole Miss, $7300, team total ~30) and WR corps vs UK pass rush. Close enough to keep stars live all 4 quarters.
  4. NC State vs Virginia — total ~54, spread ~3. Competitive with condensed usage at WR Trell Harris (Virginia, $5600, team total ~26) and WR Cam Ross (Virginia, $3500, team total ~26), plus RB Hollywood Smothers (NC State, $6500, team total ~28).
  5. Iowa at Iowa State — total low 40s but rivalry leverage. ISU heavy multi-TE usage last season; even if names shifted, the middle of the field matters: stack with care and lean into correlated low-owned builds.

Blowout Risk Tier

  • Texas vs San Jose State — spread ~36.5. If playing Longhorns, bias to early-down usage and first-half stacks like QB Arch Manning (Texas, $9600, team total ~43).
  • Penn State vs FIU — implied PSU upper 40s, spread gigantic. One-offs only.
  • Syracuse vs UConn — Cuse favored, total mid to high 50s. Still viable but watch for 4th quarter throttle.

Top Team Totals (Implied)

  • Texas ~40 to 45. Salary sensitivity needed. One or two pieces max.
  • Penn State ~48. Rotation risk in the 2H, lean to WR or QB rushing equity.
  • Ole Miss ~30. Kentucky can keep it close. Love stacking rules here.
  • Florida ~37.5. Deep shots are live.
  • SMU ~33 and Baylor ~31. My favorite shootout to attack.
Lines move. I’m using Friday AM reads. I tag line-move notes inside each game block when the swing is 2+ points.

Game by Game

Baylor at SMU

Market: SMU -2.5. Total 63 to 65. Shootout profile.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Baylor lost 38-24 to Auburn. O-line struggled. QB Sawyer Robertson (Baylor, $7700, team total ~31) threw for volume but efficiency dipped. RB Bryson Washington (Baylor, $8900, team total ~31) was still the workhorse. WR Kole Wilson (Baylor, $4600, team total ~31) led the passing game.
  • SMU rolled a tune-up. QB Kevin Jennings (SMU, $8000, team total ~33) continues to thrive vs single-high defenses. WR Romello Brinson (SMU, $4800, team total ~33) handled a heavy first-read share. Freshman WR Jalen Cooper (SMU, $3000, team total ~33) played nearly every snap after Hudson’s injury.

Matchup view

  • Some believe Baylor will adjust from last week’s two-high and drop a safety into the box vs Jennings. That boosts QB designed/run equity and opens true one-on-ones outside; WR Jalen Cooper (SMU, $3000) becomes a clean-value path while WR Romello Brinson (SMU, $4800) may see shaded help.
  • For Baylor, if they win more often on first contact, RB Bryson Washington (Baylor, $8900) can rebound, and QB Sawyer Robertson (Baylor, $7700) benefits. WR Josh Cameron (Baylor, $6000) still profiles as WR1, and TE Michael Trigg (Baylor, $4800) looked heavily involved.
  • SMU’s hidden gem is TE RJ Maryland (SMU, $5000). NFL-level talent, muted in Week 1 due to injury/rest. Expect far more usage here.

DFS targets

  • BAY: QB Sawyer Robertson ($7700), RB Bryson Washington ($8900), value RB Caden Knighten ($3200), WR Kole Wilson ($4600), WR Josh Cameron ($6000), TE Michael Trigg ($4800).
  • SMU: QB Kevin Jennings ($8000) double-stack viable with WR Romello Brinson ($4800)/WR Jalen Cooper ($3000)/TE RJ Maryland ($5000). RB rotation: RB TJ Harden ($5000)/RB Derrick McFall ($4700).

Line-move: If this pushes ≥66, expand to secondary SMU WR exposure.

Illinois at Duke

Market: Illinois -3. Total ~49.5. Tight, defensive-lean.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Illinois 52-3 over WIU. QB Luke Altmyer (Illinois, $6400, team total ~24) barely pressured. RB split between RB Kaden Feagin (Illinois, $5200) and RB Aidan Laughery (Illinois, $4200).
  • Duke 45-17 over Elon. QB Darian Mensah (Duke, $6200, team total ~25) efficient. WR Cooper Barkate (Duke, $4900) and WR Sahmir Hagans (Duke, $4300) active. WR Que'Sean Brown (Duke, $5900) is the slot leader.

Matchup view

  • Some believe Manny Diaz’s blitz rate will stress Altmyer. Illinois man-heavy coverage puts Duke perimeter winners in focus while WR Que'Sean Brown (Duke, $5900) can tax the middle. If Illinois leans run, Feagin/Laughery offer cheap TD paths.

DFS targets

  • ILL: QB Luke Altmyer ($6400), RB Kaden Feagin ($5200), RB Aidan Laughery ($4200).
  • DUKE: QB Darian Mensah ($6200) with WR Que'Sean Brown ($5900)/WR Cooper Barkate ($4900)/WR Sahmir Hagans ($4300).

Iowa at Iowa State

Market: ISU slight fav. Total low 40s.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Iowa 34-7 Albany. RB Xavier Williams (Iowa, $3000, team total ~19) led rushing. QB Mark Gronowski (Iowa, $5600, team total ~19) low volume.
  • ISU beat K-State. QB Rocco Becht (ISU, $6500, team total ~22) sharp. WR Chase Sowell (ISU, $5100) and WR Dominic Overby (ISU, $4600) involved.

Matchup view

  • ISU’s multi-TE looks and play-action still funnel seams/crossers. Iowa’s path is OL leverage and cheap depth-chart riser RB Terrell Washington Jr. (Iowa, $3100), who’s atop depth chart this week. If ISU forces Gronowski into long downs, Iowa ceiling drops.

DFS targets

  • IOWA: RB Terrell Washington Jr. ($3100), RB Xavier Williams ($3000), QB Mark Gronowski ($5600).
  • ISU: QB Rocco Becht ($6500) with WR Chase Sowell ($5100)/WR Dominic Overby ($4600). RB room MME only.

Ole Miss at Kentucky

Market: Ole Miss -6. Total high 50s.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Ole Miss 63-7 Georgia State. QB Austin Simmons (Ole Miss, $7300, team total ~30) diced. RB Kewan Lacy (Ole Miss, $5300) led with 3 TDs. WR De'Zhaun Stribling (Ole Miss, $6000)/WR Cayden Lee (Ole Miss, $6700) top options.
  • Kentucky 24-16 Toledo. RB Dante Dowdell (Kentucky, $4100, team total ~24) broke a big run. RB Seth McGowan (Kentucky, $3400) rotated. QB Zach Calzada (Kentucky, $5500, team total ~24) struggled.

Matchup view

  • If UK’s DTs collapse the pocket, Simmons’ splits dip. Still, Ole Miss WRs carry stacking appeal. Kentucky’s clearest DFS path is RB Dante Dowdell ($4100) or RB Seth McGowan ($3400).

DFS targets

  • MISS: QB Austin Simmons ($7300), WR De'Zhaun Stribling ($6000), WR Cayden Lee ($6700), RB Kewan Lacy ($5300).
  • UK: RB Dante Dowdell ($4100), RB Seth McGowan ($3400).

Kansas at Missouri

Market: Mizzou -6. Total low 50s.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Kansas 31-7 Fresno. QB Jalon Daniels (Kansas, $6600, team total ~27) efficient. WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. (Kansas, $5300) flashed. WR Levi Wentz (Kansas, $3300) involved.
  • Missouri 61-6 win. QB Beau Pribula (Mizzou, $6100, team total ~29) dual threat. RB Ahmad Hardy (Mizzou, $7000) explosive. WR Marquis Johnson (Mizzou, $5700) vertical. WR Kevin Coleman Jr. (Mizzou, $6100) underneath.

Matchup view

  • Missouri’s Cover 3 leaves KU perimeter shots. Daniels rushing + Henderson/Wentz viable. Pribula’s scramble drills benefit Johnson/Coleman. Hardy one-off play.

DFS targets

  • KU: QB Jalon Daniels ($6600) with WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. ($5300)/WR Levi Wentz ($3300), RB Daniel Hishaw Jr. ($5100).
  • MIZZ: QB Beau Pribula ($6100), RB Ahmad Hardy ($7000), WR Marquis Johnson ($5700), WR Kevin Coleman Jr. ($6100).

USF at Florida

Market: UF -17.5. Total ~56.

Week 1 snapshot

  • USF upset Boise. QB Byrum Brown (USF, $6700, team total ~20) 2 rush TDs. WR Chas Nimrod (USF, $4400) deep. WR Keshaun Singleton (USF, $5100) first-read leader.
  • Florida 55-0 LIU. QB DJ Lagway (UF, $7200, team total ~37.5) 3 TDs. RB Jadan Baugh (UF, $6200) 9-104-1. WR Eugene Wilson III (UF, $6800) and WR Vernell Brown III (UF, $3400).

Matchup view

  • USF’s leaky secondary boosts Lagway + WRs. RB Baugh a strong one-off. Bring back Nimrod/Singleton for stacks.

DFS targets

  • USF: QB Byrum Brown ($6700), WR Chas Nimrod ($4400), WR Keshaun Singleton ($5100).
  • UF: QB DJ Lagway ($7200), RB Jadan Baugh ($6200), WR Eugene Wilson III ($6800), WR Vernell Brown III ($3400).

NC State vs Virginia

Market: NCST -3. Total ~54.

Week 1 snapshot

  • NCST edged ECU. QB CJ Bailey (NCST, $7000, team total ~28) 300+ yds. RB Hollywood Smothers (NCST, $6500) dominated. WR Wesley Grimes (NCST, $4700), TE Justin Joly (NCST, $5400) condensed usage.
  • UVA 48-7 Coastal. QB Chandler Morris (UVA, $6300, team total ~26), WR Trell Harris (UVA, $5600), WR Cam Ross (UVA, $3500), RB J'Mari Taylor (UVA, $4300).

Matchup view

  • Bailey + Grimes/Joly correlate vs UVA man coverage. Smothers fits archetype UVA struggled with last year. UVA run-backs Harris/Ross fit stacks.

DFS targets

  • NCST: QB CJ Bailey ($7000), RB Hollywood Smothers ($6500), WR Wesley Grimes ($4700), TE Justin Joly ($5400).
  • UVA: QB Chandler Morris ($6300), WR Trell Harris ($5600), WR Cam Ross ($3500), RB J'Mari Taylor ($4300).

Oregon vs Oklahoma State

Market: Oregon heavy fav. Total mid 50s.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Oregon cruised. QB Dante Moore (ORE, $8500, team total ~40) led. WR Dakorien Moore (ORE, $6600) breakout chatter. RBs: RB Makhi Hughes (ORE, $8700) (barely used Week 1 despite preseason hype, per Dan Lanning’s quotes about gameflow/rotation), RB Noah Whittington (ORE, $5500) got real usage.

Matchup view

  • Oregon may open verticals. WR Dakorien Moore ($6600) is the breakout bet. Backfield confusing: Hughes usage risk, Whittington firmly in play if Hughes continues to sit, but risky if Hughes ramps up. Stay-away unless news clarifies.

DFS targets

  • ORE: QB Dante Moore ($8500), WR Dakorien Moore ($6600), RB Noah Whittington ($5500) viable if Hughes sits.
  • OKST: Nothing clear.

Texas vs San Jose State

Market: Texas -36.5. Total ~52.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Texas 7-14 loss to OSU. QB Arch Manning (Texas, $9600, team total ~43) bounce-back spot. RB CJ Baxter (Texas, $6400) led. WR Ryan Wingo (Texas, $7300) big-play role.

Matchup view

  • Major bounce-back expected, but blowout risk limits exposure. Starters may only play 1H.

DFS targets

  • TEX: QB Arch Manning ($9600), RB CJ Baxter ($6400), WR Ryan Wingo ($7300).
  • SJSU: Fade.

Syracuse vs UConn

Market: Cuse -7. Total mid 50s.

Week 1 snapshot

  • Syracuse battled Tenn. QB Steve Angeli (SYR, $6800, team total ~31), WR Johntay Cook (SYR, $6100), WR Justus Ross-Simmons (SYR, $4600), WR Darrell Gill Jr. (SYR, $6500), RB Yasin Willis (SYR, $6300).
  • UConn: WR Skyler Bell (UCONN, $5700, team total ~26), QB Joe Fagnano (UCONN, $5900), RB Cam Edwards (UCONN, $5900).

Matchup view

  • Underrated environment. Willis is a core play. Cuse WR stackable with Bell run-back. UConn RB/WR mix fits too.

DFS targets

  • SYR: QB Steve Angeli ($6800), WR Johntay Cook ($6100), WR Justus Ross-Simmons ($4600), WR Darrell Gill Jr. ($6500), RB Yasin Willis ($6300).
  • UCONN: WR Skyler Bell ($5700), QB Joe Fagnano ($5900), RB Cam Edwards ($5900).

Penn State vs FIU

Market: PSU huge favorite. Implied ~48–6.

Week 1 snapshot

  • PSU rotated. QB Drew Allar (Penn State, $8200, team total ~48) at the helm. Top listed pass-catchers on the slate include WR/TE Luke Reynolds (Penn State, $6100), WR Trebor Pena (Penn State, $5800), WR Devonte Ross (Penn State, $5500), and value WR Kyron Hudson (Penn State, $4200). Backfield remains split between RB Nicholas Singleton ($9000) and RB Kaytron Allen ($7500).
  • FIU overmatched.

Matchup view

  • Blowout risk caps stacking. I prefer one-offs: a spike WR or RB Nicholas Singleton ($9000) if you’re betting on early TDs. WR Kyron Hudson ($4200) looks too cheap if he continues to lead the WR room in routes/targets.

DFS targets

  • PSU: QB Drew Allar ($8200), WR/TE Luke Reynolds ($6100), WR Trebor Pena ($5800), WR Devonte Ross ($5500), WR Kyron Hudson ($4200), RB Nicholas Singleton ($9000), RB Kaytron Allen ($7500).
  • FIU: Fade outside of extreme MME punts.

Texas Tech vs Kent State

Market: TTU -48. Total inflated.

Week 1 snapshot

  • QB Behren Morton (Texas Tech, $8800, team total ~46) could return; if QB Will Hammond (Texas Tech, $8300) starts, adjust stacks. Pass catchers are priced up: WR Caleb Douglas ($7900) and WR Coy Eakin ($7600). Backfield: RB Cameron Dickey ($7300) with ceiling.

Matchup view

  • Onslaught risk. Prefer QB + WR minis or RB Cameron Dickey ($7300) one-offs. Keep swap flexibility between Morton/Hammond.

DFS targets

  • TTU: QB Behren Morton ($8800)/QB Will Hammond ($8300), WR Caleb Douglas ($7900), WR Coy Eakin ($7600), RB Cameron Dickey ($7300).
  • KENT: Fade.

Preseason Notes and Buzz I’m Weighing

  • Ole Miss: Interior pressure vs Kentucky is the watch-item; if clean, QB Austin Simmons ($7300) stacks hum.
  • Baylor: O-line flagged in Week 1; if practice reports trend positive, I’ll raise QB Sawyer Robertson ($7700) doubles.
  • Florida: WR Vernell Brown III ($3400) earned 2-WR snaps and a deep shot; cheap upside alongside WR Eugene Wilson III ($6800).
  • Iowa State: Usage skews to middle/TE concepts conceptually, but on this slate names like WR Chase Sowell ($5100)/WR Dominic Overby ($4600) surface.
  • Kansas: WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. ($5300) ascending as a vertical/red-zone option.
  • Oregon RBs: Dan Lanning said matchups/rotation drove RB Makhi Hughes ($8700)’s light Week 1 usage. RB Noah Whittington ($5500) is firmly in play if Hughes remains limited, but risky if Hughes ramps up.
  • Texas: Bounce-back spot for QB Arch Manning ($9600), but limit exposure due to likely blowout.

My Core Pool by Tier

Stacks: SMU (QB Kevin Jennings $8000 + WR Jalen Cooper $3000/WR Romello Brinson $4800/TE RJ Maryland $5000), Baylor (QB Sawyer Robertson $7700 + RB Bryson Washington $8900/WR Kole Wilson $4600/WR Josh Cameron $6000/TE Michael Trigg $4300), Ole Miss (QB Austin Simmons $7300 + WR De'Zhaun Stribling $6000/WR Cayden Lee $6700), Florida (QB DJ Lagway $7200 + WR Eugene Wilson III $6800/WR Vernell Brown III $3400), Missouri (QB Beau Pribula $6100 + WR Marquis Johnson $5700/WR Kevin Coleman Jr. $6100), Kansas (QB Jalon Daniels $6600 + WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. $5300/WR Levi Wentz $3300).

Skinny stacks: NC State (QB CJ Bailey $7000 + WR Wesley Grimes $4700/TE Justin Joly $5400), Virginia (QB Chandler Morris $6300 + WR Trell Harris $5600/WR Cam Ross $3500), Iowa State (QB Rocco Becht $6500 + WR Chase Sowell $5100), Duke (QB Darian Mensah $6200 doubles).

One-offs: Texas RB CJ Baxter ($6400) or WR Ryan Wingo ($7300), Penn State WR/TE Luke Reynolds ($6100) or value WR Kyron Hudson ($4200), Kentucky RB Dante Dowdell ($4100), Iowa RB Terrell Washington Jr. ($3100), Missouri RB Ahmad Hardy ($7000).

Salary savers: WR Jalen Cooper (SMU, $3000), WR Vernell Brown III (UF, $3400), RB J'Mari Taylor (UVA, $4300).

Late-swap notes: If TTU announces QB Behren Morton ($8800) in, prefer Morton + WR Caleb Douglas ($7900) minis; otherwise keep QB Will Hammond ($8300) paths open.

My Guys

These are the players I’m planting flags on this week. Each one is starred (*) in the game sections above.

  • QB Jalon Daniels (Kansas, $6600) — Missouri’s Cover 3 leaves perimeter shots, and Daniels adds rushing upside.
  • WR Emmanuel Henderson Jr. (Kansas, $5300) — Emerging red-zone and vertical threat, great pairing with Daniels.
  • WR Levi Wentz (Kansas, $3300) — Salary saver attached to Daniels stacks.
  • QB Beau Pribula (Missouri, $6100) — Dual-threat upside vs a KU defense that struggles with scrambling QBs.
  • RB Ahmad Hardy (Missouri, $7000) — Explosive runner, perfect leverage play if Pribula pulls defenders out of the box.
  • WR Marquis Johnson (Missouri, $5700) — Fits Pribula’s scramble-and-throw style.
  • WR Kevin Coleman Jr. (Missouri, $6100) — Quick-hitter role in a game expected to trade scores.
  • QB Sawyer Robertson (Baylor, $7700) — Volume path in a shootout, with a chance to prove Week 1 inefficiency was Auburn-driven.
  • RB Bryson Washington (Baylor, $8900) — Workhorse role intact, best bounce-back spot.
  • WR Josh Cameron (Baylor, $6000) — Still likely Baylor WR1 despite Week 1; matchup easier here.
  • WR Kole Wilson (Baylor, $4600) — Cheaper Baylor WR piece with solid usage.
  • TE Michael Trigg (Baylor, $4300) — Heavy involvement; sneaky leverage at TE.
  • QB Kevin Jennings (SMU, $8000) — Dual-threat upside plus double-bonus path if Baylor drops safeties in.
  • WR Romello Brinson (SMU, $4800) — Top first-read target, but starred for his ceiling in a shootout.
  • WR Jalen Cooper (SMU, $3000) — Played nearly every snap Week 1; live value if coverage tilts to Brinson.
  • TE RJ Maryland (SMU, $5000) — NFL-level TE; Week 1 injury management, should be unleashed here.
  • WR Que’Sean Brown (Duke, $5900) — Illinois man-heavy coverage funnels value to Duke WRs; Brown can tax the middle.
  • RB Kewan Lacy (Ole Miss, $5300) — Exploded Week 1 with 3 TDs; chalky but real upside.
  • RB Terrell Washington Jr. (Iowa, $3100) — Now atop depth chart; best salary relief option on slate.
  • WR Trell Harris (Virginia, $5600) — UVA’s vertical option; Bailey stacks bring him into play.
  • WR Cam Ross (Virginia, $3500) — Cheap PPR-style bring-back.
  • RB Hollywood Smothers (NC State, $6500) — Controlled NCST workload in Week 1; archetype UVA struggled with.
  • RB Yasin Willis (Syracuse, $6300) — Bulldozer role, underrated game environment vs UConn.

Good luck, and see you in the War Room. 🏈
